Your style of humor could indicate whether you’re a narcissist or a psychopath, study finds

According to a new study, what makes you laugh could indicate whether you are a narcissist or a psychopath.

Researchers from Studio Psi.Co. in Italy investigated the connection between comic style descriptors and “dark triad” personality traits.

These are psychopathy, defined by a lack of empathy and antisocial behavior; narcissism, an egocentric personality style; and Machiavellianism, showing manipulation and indifference to morality.

Psychologists claim that those with these traits may use humor to put others down or elevate themselves in a more socially acceptable way than attacking or bragging.

Researchers from Studio Psi.Co. in Italy studied the connection between comic styles and the personality traits of the “dark triad” – narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism

WHAT ARE THE EIGHT COMIC STYLES?

Lighter styles – share a base of positive emotions and caring

  1. Fun – aimed at spreading good humor and good company.
  2. Humor – aimed at arousing the sympathy and shortcomings of other humans while adhering to a tolerant and serene worldview.
  3. Nonsense – game based with incongruities and ridicule without any purpose.
  4. Mind – the ability to play with words and create intelligent thoughts.

Darker styles – related to mockery and ridicule

  1. Irony – aiming to create a mutual sense of superiority by stating things in opposition to their meaning.
  2. Satire – distinguished by belittling the bad and the senseless.
  3. Sarcasm – based on being critical of others and conveying contempt.
  4. Cynicism – aiming to depreciate commonly accepted values.

The authors wrote, “Machiavellianism and psychopathy were positively correlated with darker styles.

“Psychopathy showed the strongest positive correlations with mocking styles; satire, sarcasm and cynicism.

“Machiavellianism was the strongest predictor of irony and was unrelated to other comic styles.

“Narcissism was primarily significantly correlated with lighter styles, being the strongest predictor of wit and humor, while it was unrelated to nonsense.”

The researchers gave 715 adults two questionnaires; one to determine their comedic style and the other to uncover dark personality traits.

They used statistical analysis to determine any correlation between the two.

The eight comic styles have been defined in a study 2018and were divided into “lighter” and “darker” styles.

The four lighter styles are “fun”, “humor”, “absurdity”, and “spirit”, which share a base of benevolence and positive emotions.

The darker styles are “irony”, “satire”, “sarcasm” and “cynicism”, all of which relate to mockery and ridicule.

The analysis, published in June in Personality and individual differencesshowed connections between each style and the dark triad of narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism.

Narcissism was associated with two of the lightest styles; fun and, most strongly, wit.

Witty remarks involve coming up with unexpected punchlines, indicating creativity and intelligence.

There was also a small correlation to the darker style of satire, which can be evoked without harming the interpersonal relationships that are highly valued by narcissists.

The authors wrote, “Narcissists may use positive humor as a way to positively enhance their own reputation when interacting with others.”

Psychopathy was strongly associated with darker styles of irony, sarcasm, and cynicism.

These aggressive and “mocking” styles of humor reinforce the fact that psychopaths have little empathy and are intimidating in nature.

Psychotherapists wrote, “Psychopaths may use these types of humor to lower the status of others, regardless of other people’s feelings, because they are characterized by deficits in emotional function and antisocial behavior.”

Machiavellianism was also linked to irony and cynicism, with a stronger correlation with the former.

Researchers say this is because irony is used to highlight other people’s weaknesses in a socially acceptable way that would not tarnish one’s own reputation.

“Machiavellianism is characterized by manipulative behaviors, and these individuals may use this form of humor as a means of controlling others,” they wrote.

It was also positively related to wit, which involves playing with ideas and requires the impulse control and cognitive ability demonstrated by this personality trait.

While Machiavellianism was negatively related to benevolent humor, which treats weaknesses with kindness.

Researchers say this reinforces the fact that Machiavellians have no interest in helping others solve their problems.

Since none of the study participants showed particularly high levels of any of the three dark personality traits, future research could examine patterns with a more extreme group.

Men With Dark Personality Traits Are More Likely To Cheating Repeatedly, Study Reveals

If your boyfriend keeps talking about how awesome he is, a new study might make you suspicious.

Researchers found that men with dark personality traits — including Machiavellianism, narcissism, and sadism — are more likely to be repeat cheaters.

The survey results also showed that men scored higher than women on both moral disengagement and dark personality traits.

“People with dark personality traits can form short-term relationships more easily because they tend to have low expectations of future partners, especially in the case of men,” said researchers Laura Ferreiros. and Miguel Clemente from the Universidade da Coruna.
