Eva Nga had a great introduction to Orlando Pirates fans after her lone goal earned the Buccaneers a 1-0 victory over rivals Soweto Swallows FC in the DStv Premiership at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
New coach Jose Riveiro has given new players Nga, Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi their first official starts for the Pirates.
Nga’s goal came early in the game as the Pirates had a comfortable start to the game while the visitors found themselves lacking.
The Buccaneers looked very lively from the start, with the team enjoying a lot of possession.
A good move in the first 10 minutes of the game saw Kabelo Dlamini choose new striker Nga, and the former Chippa United striker made no mistake finding the back of the net with a low shot to delight the crowd in Orlando .
Swallow put in some effort to try to open up the Bucs defense from the wings, but their attempts weren’t fruitful.
The game would continue at the break with the Buccaneers in control.
In the second half, the Birds had some promising attacks and shots from range, but things didn’t go to plan.
In the 49th minute, Tshediso Patje fired from outside the box but new Pirates vice-captain Richard Ofori made a superb save.
Bucs also had his moments with chances from Nga to extend the home side’s lead but he couldn’t add to the tally, upsetting Buccaneers fans.
Swallows came out stronger towards the latter stages of the encounter as Pentjie Zulu’s shot went off target, while Patje forced another fine save from Ofori towards the end of the match as Swallows continued to look for a equalizer.
However, it was the Pirates who would end up walking high in the new season with three points in the bag.
