Manchester United confirm the capture of Benni McCarthy

Manchester United have confirmed that Benni McCarthy has been added to Erik ten Hag’s backroom squad as first-team manager.

Anterior Phakathi reported that ex-Bafana striker Bafana has joined the Red Devils.

This was after sportscaster Robert Marawa broke the news on his Twitter account on Saturday.

Now United have confirmed that McCarthy will indeed join Ten Hag’s backroom team.

“Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has added to his backroom squad with the appointment of Benni McCarthy as first-team manager,” read a statement from United on Saturday evening.

“The former South African striker was a Reds fan since childhood and scored twice against us for Porto in the 2003/04 Champions League Round of 16,” the Red Devils statement added.

“The former striker will specialize in training attacking plays and positioning.

“The coaching staff is now in place ahead of the start of the 2022/23 season, with Brighton & Hove Albion visiting Old Trafford on Sunday August 7 in our Premier League opener.

“Ten Hag will work closely with assistants Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, with Benni alongside Eric Ramsay and Darren Fletcher as coaches. Former midfielder Fletcher also has a wider mandate as as technical director, overseeing the progression from the Academy to the first team, as well as players on loan,” the club statement added.

McCarthy started his coaching career in 2017 with Cape Town City, where he won the MTN8 before joining AmaZulu in December 2020. He led Usuthu to a runners-up finish in the 2020/21 season and won the DStv award Premiership Coach of the Season.

The 44-year-old coach has been out of work since March this year after parting ways with AmaZulu.
