Learn to breastfeed

Dr. Tengku Nur’ Atiqah – lactation consultant, doctor and mother of three – shares her thoughts on breastfeeding a baby

For For new mothers, breastfeeding is often the natural next step after the hours of childbirth, but it’s not an easy or smooth journey for all mothers to feed their newborn.

Mothers should take the time to learn and prepare for breastfeeding before their bundle of joy arrives. Breastfeeding is beneficial for the baby as it provides the necessary nutrition for the infant.

Recently, World Breastfeeding Week 2022 (WBW) was celebrated under the theme Step up for breastfeedingaimed at educating and supporting mothers.

Alongside the theme, Buds Organics, an organic personal care product for mother and baby, hosted a session for mothers to learn everything they needed to know about breastfeeding from an expert.

The speaker, Dr. Tengku Nur’ Atiqah, Lactation Consultant, Physician, Mother of Three and Founder of Bondahaven Breastfeeding Specialist and Spa provided mothers with knowledge during the session.

We had an email interview with Tengku Nur’ Atiqah to get his views on nursing with Sun readers. Apart from Tengku Atiqah, Buds Organics Marketing Manager Edna Lim also shared some information about the company’s products with us.

What changes does a mother experience during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Tengku Atiqah:During pregnancy and birth, a mother goes through a significant paradigm shift, physically, emotionally, and mentally. First-time mothers will experience an increase in breast size as their milk glands and ducts develop, preparing their bodies to breastfeed their baby.

What should a mother know before starting to breastfeed her baby?

Tengku Atiqah:Breastfeeding is a learned skill! It’s not as automatic and natural as most people assume.

“Attend a breastfeeding class before you give birth and call for help from a lactation expert as soon as you realize you are having trouble breastfeeding.”

Li: “It is also essential to be prepared with the right products to ensure a smooth breastfeeding journey. Have Buds Cherished Organics Breast Massage Oil and Nursing Balm on hand – we promise you won’t be able to live without it.

What are common breastfeeding problems?

Tengku Atiqah:Breast engorgement, blocked milk ducts, and sore or cracked nipples are common complications of breastfeeding. These usually occur in the early stages, when mother and baby are finding their rhythm and getting used to breastfeeding. A simple solution we’ve formulated is our Buds Cherished Organics Breast Massage Oil. For mothers with breast engorgement, we strongly recommend a warm compress to open the ducts, followed by a breast massage with Organic Breast Massage Oil to remove the obstruction.

Does the composition of breast milk change at different stages?

Tengku Atiqah:One of the most amazing benefits of breast milk is its personalization – even morning and evening feedings have different contents. Your baby’s first milk: colostrum, is a concentrated liquid rich in antibodies, good bacteria, and even a slight laxative effect, to get rid of the toxic meconium contained in your baby’s belly as quickly as possible. This then changes to transition milk after day 3, to mature milk after 10 days. The content of breast milk also changes thereafter, depending on the most current needs of the baby.

Where can you find breastfeeding support in Malaysia?

Tengku Atiqah:If you are near Bangi, you can approach Bondahaven Breastfeeding Specialist & Spa for assistance. Alternatively, the Klinik Kesihatan or nearby hospitals might have a lactation team. Facebook support groups such as The Breastfeeding Advocates Network and Happy Breastfeeding Malaysia provide a wealth of information and a network of lactation counselors across Malaysia.

What advice would you give to new moms breastfeeding for the first time?

Tengku Atiqah:If you’re new to breastfeeding and aren’t sure if you’re doing the right thing, check to see if your baby is completely relaxed after feeding. If breastfeeding isn’t painful, your baby is sleeping soundly, gaining weight steadily and has about 6 wet diapers a day (for one week or more) – rest assured your baby is getting enough milk .
