England’s newly crowned Euro 2022 champions celebrated their historic victory in front of cheering fans in central London.
Thousands of female soccer fans flooded Trafalgar Square to watch their bleary-eyed heroines show off their first-ever big silverware.
Speaking to England fans, captain Leah Williamson said: “I think we celebrated more than we actually played football in the last 24 hours! Obviously amazing and to be able to share it with all those who came to the game and across the country. … we are very grateful for everyone’s support.”
England’s triumph came after substitute Chloe Kelly’s 110th extra-time winner sank Germany. The Lionesses’ 2-1 win was the first major trophy for a senior England side since the England men won the World Cup against West Germany in 1966.
Addressing the team and the nation, the Queen hailed the triumph as “an inspiration to girls and women” across the country.
