Race 6, n°11: CHOLANTE
After a disappointing start to his career, this horse has come back in huge fashion with two huge wins and looks set to continue despite his rise in rank.
Race 2, n°: DAYS OF CINDERELLA
The sky is the limit for this unbeaten filly who should suit Canterbury on her first try at the track and it’s hard to see her not being in the thick of it at the commercial end of the race.
Race 4, #4: FIVE LAPS
Could he upset his more favored stable mate Savory here? Jason Collett is riding well and should give him hope despite the clumsy draw.
Race 4: 2, 3, 4, 8
Race 5: 2
Race 6: 4, 11
Race 7: 1, 2, 8, 10
JOCKEY TO WATCH
William Pike has a great book of walks with Shohei, Inuwashi and Cholante looking like good stuff in their respective races.
COACH TO WATCH
Kris Lees has a massive hand in the final race with three horses that tend to pull fresh while Yankee Hussel is an emerging type who relishes the stage up to 1550m.
THE DOMESTIC MAIL FOR CANTERBURY
Parisal crossed them on his barrier try under James McDonald who rides it here on his debut from barrier eight. If he can settle her one on the fence and a pair or two back, she will make her presence felt. Shohei also looked great on her last try and she has racing experience on her side and should sit back and be a force as well. Lamorlaye has the racing ability to give fourth place the barrier a shot. Kerrin McEvoy’s running will be key here. Poor Edna has drawn poorly again but has the ability to do well if she starts.
Beth: bets to win
Cinderella Days won her first two and won a race around town with a bit in hand and has a barrier with Brenton Avdulla who rode her to victory last time out and this track should suit her with a cut. Insurgency was threatening like he might have challenged Cinderella Days last time but couldn’t match it and the 1.5kg pull in the weights probably isn’t enough but he should rank among the first three. Taurids has the Waller/McDonald team behind him after a surprise win on his Newcastle debut and has been testing since, so he could be a race-day type of horse. Lady Harlem won here and accelerated really well in a barrier trial and could fly under the radar here.
Beth: Quinelle 6, 7
Roots has to give weight here, but so she should give her class. She is a Stakes class horse and despite the weight advantage she gives, she should be too good. Little Mix is coming here for new coach Annabel Neasham with great form from Queensland and a second place finish on this trip and she was placed in Brisbane last time out so there’s a bit of class about her and she doesn’t know how to run a bad race Yankee Hussel is down in weight and well suited to the 1550m here after a solid 1300m win last time out at Hawkesbury as she improved as the race progressed.
Beth: Roots to win
Are Bjorn Baker’s two horses mixed up in the bets? Sure, Savory did win last time in town, but Cinque Torri also made it provincials with the turn signals for the first time, which did the trick. She has the best rider and could possibly upset the favourite. Green Flash had an apology last time out and his form on this track needs to be respected at best. Point Counterpoint came home on a campaign run last start to win, but he has a great record and beat Lord Des Animaux last time out, so he’s midweek.
Beth: Cinque Torri winner
Inuwashi is so consistent and went through the grades slowly and got a win in town here on the last start under William Pike who rides her again and she should sit on speed and race just before the home corner. He did, however, have an easy run last time in transit and it could be the same again. James McDonald stays with Akahata here after finishing second at this track on the last start and he’s now third and needs to do his best on more ground. Microna ran second last time out at Navajo Peak who is in great shape but not winning out of turn.
Beth: Inuwashi Victory
So how good is Cholante? We learn a little more here. She got into provincials last time out and she should hunt them down here and produce her best kick and become a city winner. Embeller is going to present a tough challenge here as a tough midweek guy after two barrier tries and he has gate one with the lead jockey. Audette deserves that crack in town thanks to a comfortable draw while Duchy Of Savoy has huge form around her in a Saturday race.
Beth: Cholante to win
I’ve been waiting for Geo to pick up and hope this is the day for a lightly run horse that formed around Roots and Kiss Sum who he beat last time and is in great shape. The Loch Eagle stable mate is shorter on the market because he is a Stakes placed horse and will love it if the rain hits as expected. Zarastro is also in Stakes form and is dropping back down to grade now second and he will be on speed at a track that suits him and he has won before but the wide gate is a problem. Capo Strada beat Conrad first, which is in good form and he’s well positioned here.
Beth: geo to win
