Destructive waterspout near Smith’s Island in Maryland

A waterspout that turned into a tornado ripped through Smith Island, Maryland on Thursday, Aug. 4, damaging several homes, according to local reports. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said damage assessment teams were on site and the state would provide “all resources … to assist in the response.” This footage shows the waterspout approaching the remote island, which is home to less than 300 people and is only accessible by boat or helicopter. As of Friday afternoon, more than 21,000 Maryland homes were still without power after the severe storm, officials said. Credit: Greg Anderson via Storyful
