Desserts from heaven

GOLD The city has no shortage of frozen, pounded treats on a sunny day, ranging from Japanese kakigori to bingsu, in addition to our very local ais kacang. There’s a great restaurant at SS2 that’s worth a visit if you want to satisfy your sweet cravings. The top dessert place called Aftermeal is known for its creative fusion of kakigori desserts. If you like shaved ice desserts, this is the place to go.

Aftermeal owner Ong Pei Chin (also known as Pei) said, “I started my R&D with tea-based shaving ice. After trying over ten different kinds of tea, my team and I finally settled on a premium type of oolong tea called Iron Lady Tea (Tie-Guan-Yin). After over 100 trials and errors, the Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori we offer today has become our top seller. It got such a positive reaction that all of our friends and family supported it and urged us to develop our own. [physical] shop.”

Pei, who has a background in engineering and information technology, said he lacked a mechanism to ensure good service or consistent food quality. It took him some time to become familiar with the food industry. For example, Pei – a great tea lover – did not know that tea was a product strongly influenced by the seasons.

“Food raw materials don’t follow our common sense logic, unlike engineering and IT. The quality of our desserts has changed drastically as a result of this. There are times when our customers leave the store happy, and there are other situations where it’s so bad that we literally have customers scolding our co-workers. According to Pei, they have started extensive quality control on their desserts on a regular basis since then. Employees of Aftermeal are constantly seeking consumer feedback to ensure everything is in order.

When asked what makes Aftermeal different from other dessert places, I said they only provide shaved ice, cakes and drinks. “We do not intend to offer main dishes and will therefore devote all our time and labor to making desserts only. Not just any desserts, but desserts that make people happy.” Hence their slogan: “Happiness, you deserve it”. During the pandemic, Aftermeal has struggled. Pei pointed out that shaved ice and cakes don’t travel well via delivery services.

“We struggled a lot during the pandemic. Every month we were literally losing money, and at one point we even thought about giving up altogether. [But] we persisted, and the rest, as they say, is history. I’m very happy that we didn’t give up and were able to keep the business going, and Aftermeal is doing pretty well right now. There are three main specialty desserts at Aftermeal. One is a quality combination of Iron Lady Tea and milk called Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori. Toppings include brown sugar pearls, almond flakes, jelly, and kidney beans.

Next is the bright green Royal Matcha Kakigori, which comes with pearls of brown sugar jelly and matcha ice cream, and is generously dusted with matcha powder. Additional toppings include bowls of chewy pearls, sweet potatoes, and taro balls smothered in brown sugar sauce. You can eat it with your crushed ice or on its own. It’s up to you. The next popular dessert on their menu is called the Royal Calamansi Yokan Kakigori. It is served with longan, chewy white pearls and bright pearls made from passion fruit and calamansi. If you like sweet and sour meals, you should try this shaved ice treat.

Despite their top three bestsellers and signature items, we’ve discovered something we think all chocolate lovers should try. Their Dark Milo Kakigori is to die for. The chocolate ice cream comes with Milo nuggets hidden inside the crushed ice. A chocolate malt sauce accompanies this dish of chocolate delight. It is indeed a fantastic treat for Milo fans. Aftermeal Desserts also offers delicious burnt cheesecakes in three different flavors. Classic Burnt Cheesecake, Matcha Cheesecake, and Iron Lady Burnt Cheesecake. All three cakes are savory, rich and creamy to the extreme.

We tried the calamansi winter melon, super iron lady milk tea and wild honey milk tea from their drinks menu. Their classic winter melon tea has a strong flavor and isn’t too sweet and of course the clear pearl added a nice surprise. But wild honey milk tea is definitely my favorite. The combination of milk and honey comes together so well that it’s no surprise people keep coming back.

Aftermeal Desserts is a great place to go after dinner. The options may seem simple, but Aftermeal put their own spin on their menu, so you have to taste it to understand it. This is definitely one of the best desserts to visit if you want shaved ice. Pei stressed his intention to develop enough outlets to cover key areas in Malaysia so that Aftermeal can bring happiness to as many people as possible.
