Toretsk is on the front line of the war between Ukraine and Russia, but all around you can see cyclists pedaling through the streets, going about their daily business as if defying the surrounding danger.
Oleksandr is a former miner. “How am I supposed to drive? he said “Gasoline is expensive, I have nothing to drive. And I need to get around.”
It is a similar image to Kramatorsk. Those who remain are not unaware of the risks, they have accepted them.
“I would prefer, if something happens, to die immediately,” Volodymyr said. “So that you don’t become disabled later.”
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have chosen to remain in threatened areas of Donetsk, despite government orders to evacuate.
