Carlos Vela scores twice as LAFC defeats Houston Dynamo

carlos vela scored two goals in the first half on penalties and LAFC picked up another easy win, knocking out the Houston Dynamo 3-1 Sunday night at Banc of California Stadium.

LAFC (20-8-4) has already clinched the No. 1 seed for the Western Conference playoffs, and Sunday’s victory helped the team stay ahead of the Philadelphia Union for the Major League Soccer Supporters Shield. Both teams have 64 points, but LAFC has more wins.

LAFC also improved to 16-1 when they scored first.

That first goal came in the eighth minute after Houston’s Griffin Dorsey fouled Denis Bouaga on the left side of the penalty area after a long pass from Vela.

Vela’s second penalty came four minutes into first-half stoppage time after a handball into the box by Houston’s Fafa Picault.

Ryan Hollingshead scored the team’s third goal early in the second period. It was his sixth goal of the season, which leads MLS defenders.
