American makes Hanyu-inspired quad axel history

Ilia Malinin, 17, made figure skating history on Wednesday when she landed the first quadruple axel jump in competition.

Competing in the United States International Figure Skating Classic in Lake Placid, New York, Malinin went where two-time Japanese Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu failed, landing the jump in her free skate.
