9-Year-Old Autistic Boy Gets 15,000 Birthday Cards and a Big Birthday Party

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) – For several years, nine-year-old Austin Thomason was used to being bullied at school and dumped on his birthday.

“Nobody showed up to my party, just family,” I said.

But his ninth birthday is one for the books. After a story of CBS46 aired earlier this month, thousands of cards and gifts started pouring in.

“Over 15,000 cards we received,” said her mother, Amber Sosebee.

Her birthday party was held at the local Forsyth Church on Sunday. Dozens of people drove from afar to put a smile on his face.

“His mom said he was a little bit autistic, he gets bullied and nobody comes to his parties and that spoke to me,” said Angel Turner, a participant who traveled from Alabama.

Akivia Lewis drove an hour to get to the party and she felt it was worth it.

“I’m a sucker for kids. Seeing no one showed up, I immediately contacted her aunt and asked her what can I do?” Lewis said.

The party was filled with music, love, laughter, Spiderman and Chuck-E-Cheese himself. Austin, who couldn’t stay off the slide, was impressed.

“People show up, people I don’t know, cops, fire trucks,” he said.

The kind gestures of complete strangers reminded him that he was loved and appreciated.

“Austin, I just want to tell you that you are special, you are everything, you can be anyone and everything,” Lewis said.

“You are a precious gift from God and you should always feel special,” Turner said.

From CBS46, happy birthday Austin.
