7 injured in shooting in downtown Orlando; shooter on the loose, police say

ORLANDO, Florida – The Orlando Police Department is looking for the person they believe fired into a crowd, injuring at least seven people early Sunday morning.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said at 2:22 a.m. a big fight broke out in South Orange and Wall Street. During the fight, one person pulled out a handgun and began firing into the crowd, Smith said.

Seven people were injured in the gunfire, police said.

The department originally reported six people injured by the gunfire, but another casualty was reported after they themselves were transported to AdventHealth.

Smith said the shooter is still at large and his identity remains unknown.

“We are still in the preliminary stages of this investigation,” he said, “we need the community’s help with this, so please contact us if you have any information.”

The sounds of gunfire were captured on a YouTube live stream near Wall Street. In the video, people could be seen running shortly after the gunshots.

The video then showed at least two people lying on the ground, along with officers securing the scene.

Asked about the video, Smith said he hadn’t seen it.

“I’m not aware of that at this time,” he said, “if you have any videos like this, please contact us.”

“We are outraged and heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that has disrupted the pleasant atmosphere we have come to expect in downtown Orlando, and we pray for a speedy physical and emotional recovery for those who were injured and others who witnessed this tragic event,” Commissioner Regina I. Hill said in a statement. “We are confident that the Orlando Police Department will exhaust every resource in its power to ensure that responsible for this event will be brought to justice quickly and completely. I know firsthand that business owners are committed to working with law enforcement and others to ensure that our customers can continue to peacefully enjoy their downtown experiences and will take all necessary measures to ensure that they can visit our establishments in complete safety.

“I ran and everyone ran away and all I saw was a bunch of people scattered, everyone was going crazy,” he said.
